The 10 lead banks for AES's Ras Lafan project financing in Qatar are looking to sell down some $300 million of the $572 million non-recourse loan in syndication this month having recently signed contracts to underwrite the deal. Abhay Ketkar, a banker at ANZ Investment Bank, says it's looking for up to 15 banks to commit at various tiers and hopes to wrap up syndication by year-end. ANZ is the documentation agent for the deal. Ketkar and other lead bankers declined to comment on pricing prior to a formal launch.

Chivor, a subsidiary of AES and Colombia's fourth largest generator, has received approval from a majority of a 15-strong syndicate to issue about $150-$200 million in peso-denominated bonds, says a financier at Erste Bank in New York. Without the financing, Bogota-based Chivor would likely be unable to repay a $400 million syndicated loan that matures at year-end. Approval from the entire syndicate must be received by Nov. 30 for the investment bank in Colombia issuing the bonds to be able to get them out by December, he says.

A bumper year for Middle Eastern power project deals, may have left the core markets bereft of new deals, and force bankers to look further afield to replenish the pipeline. "It's been a pretty phenomenal year. The question going forward is whether we've reached the end of the road," says one London-based financier.

Alliant Energy International, a subsidiary of Alliant Energy Resources, is looking to add about 200 MW worth of natural gas-fired generation in Brazil and also build nine small hydroelectric plants in the country over the next six years. Each hydro facility will have a 5-20 MW capacity, says Chris Schoenherr, a spokesman in Madison, Wis. The projects reflect Alliant's strategy of building and owning generation capacity in Brazil, he says. Most recently, Alliant built a 9.5 MW hydroelectric facility in the northeast section of Brazil with its partner Companhia Forca E Luz Cataguazes-Leopoldina (Cataguazes).
