New York, the third most populous U.S. state, has some 36,000 MW of installed generation capacity. Some 36.6% of the Empire State's generation output comes from dual gas- and oil-fired plants. Hydroelectric plants account for a further 17.1%, oil-fired plants for 15.3%, coal plants for 13.2%, nuclear-powered plants for 16.8% and the remaining 1.1% comes from gas-fired plants, says Jack Elder, manager of power technology at Levitant & Associates in Boston.
